What's the best way to get around Buffalo without a car?

I'm new to Buffalo and don't have a car. I'm looking for advice on the best way to get around the city without one. Has anyone used the public transportation system? Are there any good bike-share programs?

I've heard that the city is pretty walkable, but I'm not sure about the safety of walking alone at night. Any advice would be appreciated.
