Applications Open for City of Rochester's Summer Public Safety Internship Program
Young adults in Rochester interested in careers in firefighting or emergency dispatch can now apply for the city's specialized summer internship program.
The City of Rochester is calling on the next generation of civic heroes as applications officially open for the Summer Public Safety Internship Program. Spearheaded by Mayor Malik D. Evans, the initiative invites city residents between the ages of 17 and 25 to gain hands-on experience and valuable insight into careers with the Rochester Fire Department and the 911 Emergency Communications Department.
The specialized internship program is designed to create a direct pipeline for diverse, local talent to enter critical public safety roles. Over the course of the summer, selected participants will be immersed in the daily operations of these vital city services, receiving mentorship from experienced professionals and learning the foundational skills necessary to succeed in high-pressure environments.
"Our public safety professionals are the backbone of our community, and we want to ensure that our departments reflect the diverse neighborhoods they serve," Mayor Evans noted in a statement encouraging young residents to apply. "This internship is more than just a summer job; it's a stepping stone to a rewarding, lifelong career dedicated to saving lives and serving the public."
Interns assigned to the Fire Department track will learn about fire suppression techniques, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services, and the physical fitness requirements of the job. Meanwhile, those in the 911 Telecommunications track will train on advanced dispatch software, practice crisis communication skills, and shadow seasoned dispatchers as they manage real-time emergency calls from across Monroe County.
Beyond technical skills, the program emphasizes professional development, leadership training, and community engagement. Participants will attend weekly seminars on civic responsibility, conflict resolution, and career planning. The city views this comprehensive approach as essential for developing well-rounded candidates who can eventually transition into full-time roles within the municipal workforce.
Applications are currently being accepted online through the city's employment portal, with a firm deadline of Friday, April 17, at 11:59 p.m. Candidates will undergo a competitive selection process, including interviews and background checks. The city hopes this year's cohort will be the largest and most dynamic yet, paving the way for a stronger, more resilient Rochester.
