Bernadette Chirac, the former first lady of France, has died at the age of 93. Her passing is being mourned by the French community in Rochester, who remember her as a strong advocate for social causes. Chirac spent 12 years at the Élysée Palace from 1995 to 2007, beside President Jacques Chirac.

"She was a pillar of strength for the French people," said a member of the Rochester French community. Chirac's legacy extends beyond France, as she was a vocal supporter of international social causes, including education and healthcare. The Rochester community, including the University of Rochester's French department, is remembering Chirac's contributions to French culture and society.

The French House on the University of Rochester campus is a hub for French language and culture, and Chirac's passing is being felt by the students and faculty who are connected to the house. The Rochester community will come together to pay tribute to Chirac's life and legacy, and a memorial service is planned for June 15, 2026, at the Asbury First United Methodist Church. The service will be attended by members of the Rochester French community, as well as local dignitaries and University of Rochester officials.
