Bishop John Bonnici Officially Installed as 10th Bishop of the Rochester Diocese

In a historic and joyous ceremony at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bishop John Bonnici was officially installed as the 10th bishop of the Rochester Diocese on Thursday afternoon. The 61-year-old prelate, who previously served as an auxiliary bishop in the New York Archdiocese, assumed leadership of the regional Catholic community amid an overflow crowd of local faithful, clergy, and dignitaries.

The momentous occasion began with a traditional and symbolic gesture as Bishop Bonnici made three ceremonial knocks on the center doors of the cathedral. This act signaled his desired entrance into the building and his formal readiness to take on the mantle of leadership for the diocese. Approximately twenty minutes later, he was officially seated in the cathedra, or bishop's chair, drawing thunderous applause from the congregation.

During his poignant homily at the nearly two-hour installation Mass, Bishop Bonnici expressed deep humility and excitement about his new role. The letter officially appointed Bonnici as Rochester's bishop, releasing him from his previous duties in Westchester County. Following the reading, Bonnici was escorted to the cathedra by Pierre and New York Archbishop Ronald Hicks.

Also present was Bishop Salvatore Matano, whose 12-year tenure as the bishop of Rochester officially concluded as he assumed emeritus status.
