Buffalo School Board Approves New Traffic Pattern for City Honors Drop-Off

A new one-way traffic pattern will be implemented on Fosdick Street next month to alleviate dangerous morning congestion at City Honors School.

WHY IT MATTERS: Parents of City Honors students and residents living in the immediate Masten Park neighborhood will need to adjust to significant changes in their morning commutes.

The Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday evening to implement a new morning drop-off traffic pattern at City Honors School. Starting next month, a portion of Fosdick Street will be temporarily converted to a one-way street between 7:15 AM and 8:15 AM on school days in an effort to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety. Parents and local residents have long complained about the chaotic morning rush near the school. Cars frequently double-park, block residential driveways, and create dangerous blind spots for students attempting to use the crosswalks on Masten Avenue. "The current situation is completely untenable," noted Board Member Sharon Belton-Cottman during the meeting. "We have students dodging between idling SUVs just to get to their homeroom. This new pattern will force a smooth, single-file drop-off line and keep the crosswalks clear." The school district will mail detailed maps of the new traffic flow to parents next week. Additionally, the Buffalo Police Department's traffic division will station an officer at the intersection of Fosdick and Masten for the first two weeks of the new policy to help direct confused drivers and ensure compliance.
