Ferry District School PS 53 Gets a New Name to Honor a Principal Who Gave Everything to Her Community
Community School 53 is being renamed after Nan M. Wood, a principal who spent 15 years pouring herself into her school and her neighborhood.
A Buffalo elementary school is getting a new name โ and it's one the neighborhood can be proud of. Community School 53 in the Ferry District will officially become the Nan M. Wood Community School of Excellence, following a resolution put forward by School Board member Stephon Wright.
Nan M. Wood led the school for 15 years and, by all accounts, she was the kind of principal who made a neighborhood feel like it had a champion. She constantly worked to open new doors for her students and stayed deeply connected to the East Side community she served.
At the ceremony, Wood's grandson spoke on behalf of the family, and called the renaming exactly what it is โ a profound honor that makes her legacy permanent in the fabric of Buffalo Public Schools.
