A long-vacant storefront on Rhode Island Street has been transformed into a cozy new independent bookstore focusing on local authors and diverse voices.

WHY IT MATTERS: The opening brings a much-needed retail anchor to the Rhode Island Street corridor, providing a cultural hub for West Side residents and supporting local authors.

The vibrant Five Points neighborhood on Buffalo's West Side has a new addition to its growing list of small businesses. 'Rhode Street Reads,' an independent bookstore, officially opened its doors on Tuesday morning in a beautifully renovated storefront that had sat vacant for over five years. Owner and Buffalo native Maria Gonzalez spent the last eight months transforming the space, exposing original brick walls and installing custom wooden shelving. The shop offers a curated selection of fiction, history, and children's literature, with a special section dedicated entirely to Western New York authors and books about Buffalo's rich industrial history. "I wanted to create a space that feels like a community living room," Gonzalez said as she arranged a display of locally produced zines. "We don't just want to sell books; we want to host local poetry readings, neighborhood book clubs, and after-school story hours. The West Side is so incredibly diverse, and I want our shelves to reflect the people who live here." The bookstore will be open Tuesday through Sunday, closing on Mondays. To celebrate their grand opening week, Rhode Street Reads is offering a 10% discount to anyone who shows a Buffalo & Erie County Public Library card at the register.
