UB Study Reveals Over Half of BPS Families Miss Out on Top School Choices

A University at Buffalo study found that more than half of families in the Buffalo Public Schools lottery didn’t get any of their chosen schools.

WHY IT MATTERS: It confirms ongoing frustrations among parents trying to secure nearby school placements for their children.

A newly released University at Buffalo study highlights challenges in the Buffalo Public Schools application process. After reviewing two years of data, researchers found that more than half of families applying through the school placement lottery were not matched with any of their selected schools.

Advocates and researchers say this raises concerns about whether families truly have meaningful choice. Many parents report that while there are many options, the system is difficult to navigate and often results in placements far from their preferred neighborhoods.

The findings may push the Buffalo School Board to reconsider how the lottery system works. Families are calling for a more equitable system that prioritizes neighborhood access and reduces transportation challenges.
