Founded in 1978 as the Buffalo Friends of Olmsted Parks, the organization was renamed the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy (BOPC) in 1995 to shift its focus toward active preservation and restoration of the city's historic parklands. In 2004, the Conservancy entered into a groundbreaking, first-of-its-kind public-private partnership agreement with the City of Buffalo and Erie County, assuming full responsibility for the daily operations, management, and maintenance of the entire historic park system. Designed over 150 years ago by America's premier landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, and his partner Calvert Vaux, Buffalo's park system was the first coordinated system of public parks and connecting parkways in the nation.

The Conservancy stewards 850 acres of public green spaces that weave through nearly every neighborhood in the City of Buffalo, serving a highly diverse urban community. These historic spaces—encompassing Cazenovia, Delaware, Front, Martin Luther King, Jr., Riverside, and South Parks—act as vital natural retreats, recreational hubs, and cultural anchors for over one million annual visitors from across Western New York, bridging communities from North Buffalo to South Buffalo and the West Side.

The primary mission of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is to steward Buffalo's historic Olmsted park and parkway system to benefit and to welcome all. Guided by Olmsted's original democratic vision that public parks are essential for mental and physical well-being and should be accessible to all citizens, the BOPC works through collaboration, advocacy, and intensive capital improvements to restore, beautify, and protect these historic urban forests and landscapes.

BOPC operates year-round maintenance, horticultural care, and public programming across six major parks, seven connecting parkways, eight landscaped circles, and several smaller green spaces. Key facilities include the historic Parkside Lodge in Delaware Park, the South Park Arboretum, and the MLK Jr. Park wading pool. The Conservancy leads extensive volunteer tree-planting initiatives, historical walking tours, and seasonal public events. By preserving Buffalo's "city within a park" identity, the BOPC plays an essential role in local environmental conservation, historic preservation, and urban quality of life.
