Delaware Park is Buffalo's crown jewel — a 350-acre oasis designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same landscape architect who created Central Park and Prospect Park. Completed in 1876, it's the centerpiece of Buffalo's historic Olmsted Park System, the first such system in the country, and it remains the city's most beloved public space.

The park is divided by the Scajaquada Expressway (Route 198), with the Meadow side to the north and the Lake side to the south. Hoyt Lake, the man-made centerpiece, is where you'll find joggers circling the 1.8-mile loop path, rowers gliding across the water in summer, and couples on the Rumsey Park stone bridge — one of the most photographed spots in Buffalo. The Delaware Park Casino, a restaurant and event space designed by Stanford White in 1900, sits at the lake's edge and serves as a gathering spot for post-run brunches and summer concerts.

The Meadow side is where you'll find the golf course, tennis courts, and playing fields, plus the Delaware Park Rose Garden — a hidden gem that explodes with color from June through September. The park connects directly to the Buffalo Zoo on the north end and the Buffalo History Museum on the south, making it the anchor of a full day of activities. Joggers and cyclists share the paths (there's a dedicated bike lane on the Ring Road), and in winter, the hills behind the casino become impromptu sledding runs. The Shakespeare in Delaware Park troupe performs free outdoor theater on Shakespeare Hill every summer — it's the second-largest free Shakespeare festival in the country.

The 1.8-mile loop around Hoyt Lake is the most popular running route in Buffalo — it's flat, scenic, and well-lit. For a longer run, connect to the Jesse Kregg Pathway, which links Delaware Park to the Olmsted Park System's other gems. Parking is free along the Ring Road and at the Casino lot. The park is open dawn to dusk year-round. The golf course and tennis courts charge fees ($20–$40 for golf, $5 for tennis), but everything else is free.

Local tip: The Japanese Garden behind the Buffalo History Museum, at the south end of Hoyt Lake, is one of the most peaceful spots in the city — and almost nobody goes there. It's especially stunning in late April when the cherry blossoms bloom.

Delaware Park is where Buffalo goes to breathe. It's where kids learn to ride bikes, where high school cross-country teams train, where first dates happen on the bridge at sunset. Olmsted believed parks were democratic spaces — places where all classes could gather — and Delaware Park still fulfills that promise every single day.
